Objects talk back

After one of the Turfan archaeological expeditions in the early 1900s, a fragment of a Manichaean text written in Uyghur and Old Turkic found its way to the Museum für Asiatische Kunst of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Originating from the Northern Silk Road region (now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China), these “loose leaves” became a source of inspiration for Rawi Hage: “I was born near Byblos in Lebanon. The ancient city of Byblos is believed to be the place where the first alphabet was invented.” Encountering this rare and precious manuscript, with its layered and multicolour words, Hage reflects on the movement, uprooting, displacement  and migration of both objects and people.

Series Objects talk back published by Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

Rawi Hage was born in Beirut and survived the Lebanese Civil War of the 1970s and 1980s. He emigrated to New York and later to Montreal, where he established himself as a photographer and writer, exploring themes such as homelessness, exile, and the consequences of war. His novels have been honored with internationally renowned literary awards and translated into thirty languages.

Canadian writer Madeleine Thien reflects on a fragment of a mural depicting Three Uyghur Princes from one of the Bezeklik Caves along the Northern Silk Road, in what is now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. This most renowned donor portrait of Uyghur-Buddhist art was brought to the Berlin museums following the Second German Turfan Expedition (1904–5). Thien responds to its vibrant colours and expressive lines with a literary text, transporting us into the daily lives of the painters who adorned the caves with strikingly lifelike murals in the tenth century. She asks: Is there an autonomous republic of art that transcends time and place?

Series Objects talk back published by Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

Madeleine Thien was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her diverse body of work includes novels, short stories, a children’s book, as well as numerous essays. Central to her writing is the question of how, against the backdrop of migration, trauma, and the search for identity and belonging, personal and collective history can be retold. Her work has been translated into more than 25 languages and has won Canada’s most prestigious literary awards as well as numerous other prizes. Madeleine Thien lives in Montreal, Canada.

Objects talk back

Meena Kandasamy contemplates the Mithuna couple, a 17th century ivory sculpture from Tamil Nadu, India. Starting from this depiction of lovers, the author unfolds a multilayered narrative that moves in several directions through images, questions, and contradictions.

"How can we look at this piece without talking about who created it?" she asks, examining how caste and class are as indelibly etched into the object as its physical details. This awareness complicates the seemingly straightforward associations of "love" that the sculpture might evoke. Meena Kandasamy refuses to idealise or exoticise the carving, instead linking it to personal and political narratives: Who is allowed to love whom? She contrasts the intimate with the institutional in order to challenge concepts such as decolonisation, restitution, and preservation. Through a striking blend of styles - Twitter, academic discourse, poetry, memoir - she engages in a dialogue with the object: forwards, sideways, backwards.

Part of the series Objects talk back, published by the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace.

Meena Kandasamy is a poet, novelist and translator. Her work focuses on the militant resistance against caste, gender, and ethnic oppressions. She explores this in her books of poems such as Touch (2006) and Ms. Militancy (2010), as well as her three novels, The Gypsy Goddess (2014), When I Hit You (2017), and Exquisite Cadavers (2019). Her novels have been shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Jhalak Prize and the Hindu Lit Prize. The Book of Desire, her translation of the love poetry of the 2000-year-old Tamil classic Tirukkural was published in 2023.

“Most of the time, it is the power of men that we remember.” With these words, which open Léonora Miano’s text for Objects Talk Back, an astonishing new narrative unfurls around Mandu Yenu, a throne from the ancient Kingdom of Bamum (present day Cameroon).

The Germans long claimed the object was a gift from King Njoya to Kaiser Wilhelm II. Miano reads “between the lines of beads and cowrie shells” to show the complex intricacies of colonial and gender relations. Dismissing all pretense of egalitarianism between colonizer and colonized, she hones in on the very nature of power—how and by whom it is defined-wielded-subverted.

King Njoya said he “felt like a woman in his relationship with the Germans.” Miano takes this as a prompt to examine contrasting cultural notions of femininity and thus reveals how central women are to the story of the throne. As the very name of the object suggests, it is the power of women we should remember.

Series Objects talk back published by Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

Born in Cameroon, Léonora Miano lives and writes between continents: in her country of origin, France, and in Togo. Her novels, plays and essays have won numerous awards. Most recently, her celebrated work Season of the Shadow was published in English by Seagul Press.

About a Coronation Cloak from Ethiopia

Inspired by the history of the 1868 Napier expedition and the burning of the palace fortress at Magdala, Of Interest to the General Public is a narration by the Ethiopian writer and photographer Maaza Mengiste. She combines photographs and text to re-imagine the journey of the stunning and elaborately made royal cloak from Ethiopia – out of battle, through fire, over mountains to cross the waters into Berlin, Germany.

The œuvre of Maaza Mengiste, who currently lives in New York, is composed from voices and stories that have been excluded, from gaps that seem inexplicable, from images, objects and places that pulse with pasts unresolved.

Series Objects talk back published by Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

Maaza Mengiste is a novelist, essayist, and photographer. Her debut novel Beneath the Lion’s Gaze was named by The Guardian as one of the ten best contemporary African books. Her novel The Shadow King was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2020. Mengiste is the founder of Project3541, a collective memory project about the Italian Ethiopian War of 1935–1941 that seeks to move beyond the static nature of an archive.

An Ornament for the Most Sacred Part of the Body

From a seemingly simple comb, the award-winning novelist and playwright Whiti Hereaka creates a mirror work of reverence and beauty. It is a text in nine sections, “a part for each tooth, and a part for each space between them”. The parts tell stories of love, loss, longing, including tales of whales from whose bones objects were made, of a carver creating a comb, of Māori gods and the power of women, of colonial whalers fishing their prey almost to extinction in the South Pacific, of a writer who cuts her hair and moves across worlds weaving connections.

In her text Whiti Hereaka unfurls a stunning cosmology around the heru, combing with it through time and space to make "stories of ocean blue, blood red, bone white", thus shattering the silence left by the museum description "Zugang ungeklärt" (access unclear).

Series Objects talk back published by Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss.

Whiti Hereaka is a novelist and playwright of Māori and Pākehā descent. Her iwi affiliations are Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Te Arawa, Ngāti Whakaue, Tuhourangi, Ngāti Tumatawera, and Tainui. She lives in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, and is the author of four novels: The Graphologist’s Apprentice, Bugs, Legacy, and Kurangaituku. Together with Witi Ihimaera, Hereaka edited an anthology of Māori myths—Pūrākau—in 2019. Her most recent work, You Are Here, was created in collaboration with artist Peata Larkin and was published in 2025 by Massey University Press as part of the Kōrero series.

Familienbild nachzudenken.

Family. Everyone has one, and each one is different.
This unconventional book challenges traditional
notions of the nuclear family by presenting voices
from around the world in a series of “snapshots.”
It asks: Who belongs to the family?

What economic and social functions does the family fulfill?

What shapes the family, and how does it shape us?

Key questions being discussed in local settings around the
globe demonstrate how complex and diverse - but
also how similar - the idea of the family is across
cultures. This is an invitation to reflect on one’s own
concept of family.

FAMED AND DEFAMED, REMOVED AND REMEMBERED

The Palace of the Republic was the building that most exemplified political power in East Germany. Built from 1973 to 1976 in the middle of Berlin, the state and cultural

centre was the seat of the Volkskammer (parliament) as well as a meeting place with event and gallery spaces, restaurants, a theatre, discotheque, and bowling alley.

The first freely elected Volkskammer convened there in March of 1990. Shortly thereafter, the building was closed because of asbestos contamination. In the

early 2000s, the shell was successfully used for cultural purposes but demolished nonetheless not much later. Today, the Humboldt Forum stands in its place. Yet the

palace remains present in many people’s memories.

This volume explores aspects such as closeout sales, construction site, ghosts, Glass Flower, Global South, identity, interim use, lighting system, Marx & Engels,

palaces of culture, reconstruction, Stasi, and more. Recent research, artistic contributions, and personal interviews open new perspectives. The Palace of the

Republic thereby emerges as an all-German topic.

What the Humboldt Brothers have to do with the Humboldt Forum.

Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt are the namesakes of the Humboldt Forum. Their biographies, works, points of view, as well as the circumstances in which they lived build a compelling relationship with the Humboldt Forum - starting with the brothers' early lives, growing up near the palace and the royal family. Their later travels, Alexander's nature studies, and Wilhelm's language studies not only illuminate the"interconnected system of nature and culture", they often prove to be astonishingly relevant:What does language mean for living together in a society? In what ways do we acquire knowledge and what responsibilities come with this knowledge? How do we address the colonial contexts of the past as well as of the present?

The Humboldt brothers' insights about the interconnected world, the spirit of their research, their curiosity and their cosmopolitanism inspire the Humboldt Forum's artistic and scientific programme. This book connects the works of the brothers with the cultural institution named after them - and dares to take a new look at these two famous scholars' wide-ranging cosmos of ideas through text and image.

What the Humboldt brothers have to do with the Humboldt Forum. Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt gave the Humboldt Forum its name.

The brothers' biographies, their works and views, but also the circumstances in which they moved, create a tense relationship to the Humboldt Forum - beginning with their growing up together near the palace and the royal family.

Her later travels, Alexander's nature and Wilhelm's language studies illuminate the"intertwined system of nature and culture"and often prove to be incredibly topical:What does language mean for living together in the community? In what ways do we acquire knowledge, and what responsibility does this knowledge entail? How do we deal with colonial conditions in the past and present? The knowledge of the Humboldt brothers about the networked world, their spirit of research, their curiosity and cosmopolitanism inspire the artistic and scientific program of the Humboldt Forum.

This book connects the work of the brothers with the cultural site named after them - and dares a new look at the wide-ranging cosmos of thought of the two famous scholars in texts and pictures.

The successful exhibition from Canberra is coming to Berlin:Discover the origin of Australia first-hand based on one of its central creation stories! Conceived and realized by an Indigenous Board of Trustees in cooperation with the National Museum of Australia and the Australian University, the volume takes us into the impressive world of songlines. Songlines are cultural routes that criss-cross Australia. In stories, songs, ceremonies or rock paintings they tell of the legend of the seven sisters who created the country on their journey. They are reflected in the landscape and star constellations and are carriers of knowledge of indigenous culture that is essential for survival. Using the example of the songlines of the Seven Sisters, the richly illustrated volume tells a lively story about the rules of coexistence, the mapping of the rights of Indigenous Australians and the responsibility for their country.

Ivory fascinates. As long as 40,000 years ago people carved mammoth tusks into artful figures and musical instruments, and it remains popular as a material to this day.

Ivory polarises. Severed elephant tusks represent both injustice and violence. The exploitation of man and nature, the imminent extinction of the elephant, as well as poaching and organized crime are all phenomena which we associate with the use of ivory today.

The publication approaches the subject critically and poses questions about our responsibility in our dealings with both animal and material.

Fascinated by ivory. Humans used mammoth tusks to create elaborate figurines and musical instruments as early as 40,000 years ago, and the material continues to be popular today.

Ivory polarized. Because today the tusks of the elephants stand for injustice and violence at the same time:the exploitation of people and nature, the threatened extinction of elephants, illegal hunting and organized crime are phenomena that are associated with the use of ivory. The volume takes a critical approach to the subject and poses the question of our responsibility in dealing with animals and materials.
